Circle of Truth Goes Global

The original Circle of Truth project was curated by Laura Hipke & Shane Guffogg and created with the participation of 49 intrepid artists living in the united States. The project is now a traveling exhibition with a busy schedule of venues ahead. During the early days of the first museum exhibition for the Circle of Truth, in January of 2019, when the full weight of the project’s findings could be evaluated, Shane Guffogg posed a question to Laura Hipke that has broadened the scope of the Circle of Truth Project. “What would happen if the project were executed by artists in other parts of the world?” Specifically, would the artists’ experiences of Truth bear noticeable differences depending on their global region or culture, or would the results exhibit some common human experience – a thread that is shared by all artists around the world? As with the original project, these questions cannot be answered without the participation of many other artists. you are being invited to participate in a “branch” of the Circle of Truth, to explore and hopefully answer Guffogg’s intriguing question. The original Circle of Truth Project took nine years to complete. The curators now have a team of co-curators and others assisting with the next phase of the Circle of Truth, and expect the new “branches” of the project to be completed more quickly. regardless of the anticipated timetable, your participation will require patience, and a willingness to leave your artwork contribution in the custody of the curators for several years. The curators are looking for artists, each with a strong spirit of cooperation and collaboration, as well as a willingness to focus on the concept of Truth. The concept of Truth will not be defined by the curators. it will be up to each individual artist to define what Truth means to them. This challenge is extended in earnest to each and every artist who is invited to participate in the Circle.

The Premise

The Circle of Truth has been described as an unbroken chain of artworks, each created in response to a prior artwork. This artistic exploration of Truth is based on a childhood game, sometimes called “Telephone” or “rumor,” that some played in school. To play this game, a secret story was whispered from one student to the next. By the time the story had made its way around the classroom to the last student it had evolved sometimes containing nothing of the original message. The Circle of Truth Project is a visual version of this interesting exercise.
